don and greg, yeah, you all are right, the lp's and the mx's did have amber rotator filters in addition to the red and blue. however, there didn't really seem to be any real method to their madness. some of the trucks and cars out there still equipped with the mx7000's might have the amber rotators to the inside, or sometimes they'll only have an amber rotator on one side of the bar. the jetsonic i bought off of the dps had 2 amber filters on the "red" side of the bar, and one on the "blue" side of the bar. and i think you're also right as to some of the forward facing filters being amber as well.

using amber isn't that bad of an idea, anyway. i think someone posted a link to a study on the forum stating that the amber was more likely to warn people approaching instead of the red/blue.

that arizona twin sonic with the amber/red and two speakers in the middle looks kinda strange, though (i know it's not pictured here).

I KNOW THE T.H.P.(DPS) USED THERE CLEAR LIGHT BARS WITH AMBERS BUT THEY WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RED ON THE LEFT AND BLUE ON THE RIGHT BUT NEVER ENTIRELY AMBER..THE STATE (TEXAS) LEAVES OUT THE AMBER WITH BLUE ONLY ISSUED OUT TO TEX DOT...AND ALL AMBER TO SECURITY AGENCIES..

Yes, etg, all three cars are AZ DPS. That was pretty much the standard in Arizona back then on Visi-bars. Lots of depts. used one amber lens, one red lens.

The trooper in the Mercury probably decided he liked the red on the driver's side and switched it himself. Easy to do and probably had a Sgt. who didn't care if he changed it.

Taco, I checked some of my TX DPS pictures and anonymous is right. They did have revolving amber lights along with the red and blue on their MX7000 bars:

I remember seeing amber filters to the front of their JetSonics too, but I don't have any pictures of those on my page. I'll have to check my photo albums at home.

DPS lightbars included amber rotators or primary warning flashers from the early 90's until 2001 or 2002. They started with LP6000's (I think) and JetSonics, then upgraded to MX7000's. The MX7000 combination was red and blue outboard rotators, then red and blue rear flashers, then amber inboard rotators, and finally the siren grille in the middle. That was the main level. Secondary lighting on the lower level was the amber traffic director to the rear and two or four takedowns to the front. In 2001 or 2002, DPS changed to all-light MX7000's and dropped the amber rotators, going with red and blue both inboard and outboard, a white rotator in the middle, and the siren behind the vehicle's grille. In 2003 or 2004, the first Whelen strobe/LED combo bars went out for testing, followed within a year or so by the now standard all-LED.

In other news, I need to get out more.

he's talking about amber being used as a primary light, not as an amber flasher. the texas dps used mx7000's with amber arrowstick assemblies in the rear facing lower deck. their new edge led lightbars also have an amber signal warning system to the rear. this would equate to modern copcars if, for example, a police car had an entire side of its lightbar red, and the other side amber. if i'm not mistaken, that's the point joetex is trying to make.

however, i do notice that middle vehicle has the rotators reversed. in the two flanking vehicles, the drivers side has the amber light, and on the middle car, the amber light is over the passenger side. i wonder if all three cars are azdps.

That shows what you know, TEX. The Texas Highway Patrol used amber lights on their lightbars up until about 4 or 5 years ago.
