Nice ride as for the state of CHP or if Bluesmobile. Love to come across one of these for myself for real too.

Thanks for the history lesson that no one asked for.
And I would hardly call a Vis-a-bar lightbar with twin Federal model 14 revolvers "soup-can" lights.

1968 was the first year that the Texas DPS Highway Patrol started using these graphics. The white hood, roof, trunk + black fenders & doors are still used today. The soup-can lights remind me of "Adam-12"

we also used LTD 2'S. in our department.Our cars just up until very recently,ran on propane.We had a major problem of blowing engines.Some cars were on the 3rd engine the two years we used them .The cars were slowly fased out and replaced with the full size crown vics

Okay, so after all of Ford's hard work is said and done - does the "new and improved" Crown Vic handle and drive any better?

Okay...I should have included this in the previous posting...but I forgot.

What did Ford do to the 2003 Crown Vic - increase the width of the suspension on the front and the axles on the back? Any particular reason for this?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ford changed the steering components up front and suspension at the back. The center of the wheels had to be moved outward in order to have them fit on the new setup. 2002 and older wheels WILL NOT fit on the '03 cars.
These cars were embarrasing..the dep't I worked for in the early 90's still had a couple 86 Marquis (why Marquis and not LTD's, I don't know), but, being the new guy, I got stuck in one..they were a god awful butterscotch color...One night I still laugh about, my first job for the shift was to pick up another unit at the garage after he was towed in with his disable Marquis that inexplicably died on him.....On the way back to the house, we were dispatched to an alarm motion detected at a local bank....well we hit the lights and I (always loving speed) "tromped it!" we heard a few backfires and then the car started slowing down allowing us to hear a sound like nails on a chalk board...It was the exhaust system that blew off the car from the catalytic converter on back...dragging behind us...we arrived at the bank which was only a few blocks away...exhaust system in tow sounding like a large lawn mower....scared the heck out of the cleaning lady who set off the alarm...I had to walk away from my partner who couldn't stop laughing so I could call in...we need another tow at this location. I guess being six years old and having close to 200k miles we got our money's worth.
What kind of light bar is that?
**************************
It looks very similar to the TrippLight lightbar on Dave the webmaster's 1971 Plymouth Fury
I remember back in the mid to late 70's, Oklahoma City Police had a batch of these AMC Matadors. They looked just like the one pictured here, and they ran the crud out of 'em!. I vividly recal when I was about 13, getting chased by an officer in one of these when I was riding a dirt bike in an area on the north side that was known as the Sand Pits. I had a blast playing cat and mouse with him, and he never caught me. But he gave it hell trying!....took that old Matador places only dirt bikes went. If I met that officer today, I'd like to shake his hand.
No, the photograph was taken by John Anderson. It's in his album. It was taken during a funeral for an officer.
Those are Nevada Highway Patrol cars and I would not be speeding through the desert on the way to Vegas or Tahoe with these things on the road !
