This 1953 Plymouth, Maryland State Police car 216, was driven by my father, Trooper Donald A. Tucker in July 1953 when three men held up a bank at Libertytown, near Frederick, MD. My father spotted the getaway car minutes after the alarm went out and a high speed chase ensued. While the robbers tried to escape, one of them began shooting at my father pursuing them. The chase ended on a street in downtown Frederick after the getaway car crashed and all three robbers were captured on the scene and the money they stole, over $15,000.00 was all recovered. This happened in a span of about 15 minutes.
There was a photo published in most of the newspapers including the Baltimore Sun showing my father pointing to a spot on the right front fender of car 216 where a bullet had struck. I have a digital scan of that newspaper photo. My father received a Governor’s Commendation for his actions in bringing the situation to a swift and successful end. By the way, no one was hurt.
