These baby blue patrol cars weren't the first pastel police cars Chief Gain initiated. Charles R' Gain was Chief of Police in Oakland, California right across the bay from San Francisco from 1967 until his appointment as Undersheriff of San Francisco and later as Chief of SFPD. Gain repainted the black and white Oakland PD cars to a crummy beige and white scheme retaining the door shield but later replacing it with an "Oakland Police Services" logo on the front fenders that depicted an abstract oak tree design, derisively called "Gain's brain" by OPD officers because it resembled a brain. The car numbers were painted on the doors. This came to an end in the early to mid 1980's when Oakland Chief George T. Hart returned the police cars to their black and white color scheme and restored the shield insignia to the doors.

If you view the latest pictures, the white walls are now gone. Next to go will be the red interior and I need to find an era correct blue & gold "E" plate.

Four years later and reviewing the site, the cars are still dreadful. Those Chevettes and the blue Ford Pinto in the background were probably that Chief's idea of a swell detective's car as well! That's even worse than a K-Car! Phil Henning, Lt Col, USAF (Ret) l

Beautiful car - nice resto job! The only negative thing I could see is that it does not look quite right with whitewall tires. (Then again, maybe that is what they used on that agency's cars back then.)

The restorer acknowledged this when the photo was submitted. This is still a work in progress, but near completion.

Actually, the year was 1992. I would know...since that is me.

Hey guys i wonder if u still have this 86 caprice.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Matt, it's Lenny. I'm the sales manager here at the used car section of copcar dot com. I can see you've got a good eye there, buddy. You seem like a guy who knows a great car and can jump on an opportunity when it knocks.
The car in this picture was totalled in a pursuit shortly after this photo was taken, but I do have the LAST 1986 Caprice ordered by the Beverly Hills police, car A-27. It was paid for and delivered but then it was parked in the back of their municipal garage to be used as a spare motor pool car. Well, 19 years later it only has 14,000 miles on it. THAT'S LESS THAN 1000 MILES PER YEAR!! This cream puff is a super tight, super sweet runner that needs nothing. It's still fully equipped with all the lights and sirens. But, it won't go cheap.
Matt, I like you and I want to see you in this car. Email me and let me know what it's going to take to seal the deal with YOU before we offer it to the rest of our viewers!
The only Oldsmobile available with a police package back then was the full size Olds 88 4dr sedan.
Guest Car Guy wrote: Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 18:20
Was that a police package?
Guest Vince wrote: Thursday, June 16, 2005 - 21:55
I love the 80's
Guest Matt wrote: Friday, May 20, 2005 - 11:00
I would like to know if this car is still available Lenny so just write back and tell me.
Thank You
Matt? What happened to you? It's been 3 months. We held onto the car as long as we could, but our district sales executive wants us to make room for the new stock. We are currently waiting on a credit approval from a young man in Manitoba who offered us $1250(US) for this fine Fairmont- and it's worth every penny. But, like I said before I'd much rather sell it to YOU. The problem now is the money. If you can make me a better offer than the Manitoban guy I think I can get our exec to let me sell it to you, which is where it belongs! Do you see my point on this? You know I can only do so much. The next step is up to you. I hope to square up this deal with you very soon.
Good Friday, no school today. Which also means no parental supervision. Matt, go check out some porn sites while no one is home.
Hey Matt. This is your lucky day. This beauty is currently up for sale for a one-time-only low price of $850 (Canadian) including the lightbar. To buy this car, go to www.copcar.com and click the banner that says "support copcar dot com" at the bottom of the page. Hurry because there was another guy interested in it but, between you and me, I'd rather sell it to you. You seem like a guy who appreciates a fine police vehicle when you see one. Am I right?
I think boring is in the eye of the beholder. I love the fact that California police cars are so steeped in tradition. Take a look at a CHP or an SFPD or LAPD unit. The graphics on those cars have not changed for 50 or so years! Too often, agencies (particularly those with white cars and pastel stripes) are changing their graphics annually, losing any since of identity for the agency. A police car should look like a police car...most often, California cars do.
He probably meant how many years were they used after 77.
