yes they do, like most large agencies they purchase new vehicles often... They mostly use SUV's though outside of Anchorage and the other large cities... you may want to know that is an Anchorage PD cruiser in front of it and this is downtown Anchorage near the courthouse... You can always find many cruisers (marked and unmarked) parked near here

Although this is the older Ford police cars, Alaska State police probably had owned the new Ford Police Interceptors.

On the episodes of COPS with Alaska State Troopers I recall they would often get called by small town marshalls to fly in and do investigations.

For those of you who watch COPS, I remember they did a couple of episodes with the Alaska State Troopers way back in the early 90's in which they responded to calls in helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. Like PTR-Jason said, the troopers were based in a small merchant town.

They are also so spread out, unless you are working near a city, that there is usually only 1 or 2 Troopers per 500 square miles. They often have their office in a small well known merchant town and fly out for the calls for service. They do not really get called, as most towns to not have a phone, they get their reports of crimes and other things as townsmen and fisherman, or tribesmen come into the town, usually days after the incident occured.

In some areas the Troopers also act as the judge, when they come into a town, they hear of all things that had accured and handle them at that time.

Most of the people in the back territories, can not afford or do not travel away from their homes. Crimes are often dealt with a towns marshal (usually a respected elder) and then given to the Troopers when they come.

Because they are so spread out they have to fly all around the state and do everything from transporting prisoners to see appear before a magistrate to enforcing fish and game laws.

Being an Alaska State Trooper would be the most diverse of all law enforcement jobs.

Really? Why would it be that different from being an officer in any other desolate area in Montana or Idaho for example?
