Similar to parks enforcement, except that the sanitation police are sworn, armed police officers. Their job, as was said below, is to prevent and investigate crimes involving sanitation laws and the public health in general. Basically, if you see somebody throwing an old sofa in the river or pouring bleach down a drain, this department would be extremely interested. Remember, NYC has the largest governmental structure in the nation besides the feds, so there are dozens of small, rather obscure police departments like this one lurking around the city.

just like Parks Enforcement

The Jan 22nd comment is correct. They are armed and have full powers of arrest but usually only do so for crimes related to sanitation laws and crimes they come across while performing their duties. There are about 120 sworn officers in the department.

It is highly unusual that this police department is driving Ford Taurus.
