I have read about the IDOT emergency towtrucks in a book that I have. These are some very big, very impressive and very well equipped towtrucks. They are also very cool looking. I live in the San Fransisco bay area and we have our own version of these towtrucks used by Caltrans (California Dept. of Transportation) to respond to emergencies on the several bridges that we have around here. Our Caltrans towtrucks are also very big and well equipped however they have a coat of flaming orange paint instead of yellow. Because they are often the first to respond to an emergency on one of the bridges the Caltrans towtrucks are classified as fully authorized emergency vehicles. They are the only towtrucks in the state of California that are allowed to have red emergency lights and sirens and their drivers recieve full EMT training. I'm sure that the IDOT towtrucks are used for many of the same situations as our Caltrans towtrucks. Out of curiosity, how much authority and training do the drivers of these trucks have? Are these trucks classified as emergency vehicles? What color warning lights do they have, amber or red and amber? Appreciate any info you can give me on these amazing rescue vehicles of the highway.

Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert brought his 55 Mack ladder truck to fly the flag
I had the honor of meeting Mr. Hastert while I was showing my 1949 model LS 95 Mack at a car show in St. Pete, Florida. What a great guy. Hope to see him there again this year. (May 4, 2003)
