This Crown unit was one step from being a San Diego Unified School District bus! Not a pretty sight! Guess it had a better life fighting fires than hauling 50 noisy kids.

These once proud American LaFrance trucks would do a lot of third world countries proud! Timeless classics, the tiller driver negotiating tight city streets with the Federal wailing trying to break heavy traffic racing to a tenement fire on the lower East Side? When I was a kid watching the Boston Fire Department out of my granddad's third story apartment window, seeing race down Tremont Street and make that hard left turn onto Berkeley, I wanted to be that guy at the tiller. Wow. Phil Henning, Lt Col USAF (Ret)

That appears to be North Tree Fire Agency. Private company out of Monterey County.

If memory serves, they did not drive a '90s Ford F-350, They drove a 1970 Dodge. Also, if memory serves, their unit No. was 51, not 163. To make a long story short, you need to watch more TV Land.

Rescue 51 is no longer in service full time due to San Mateo County's First Responder paramedic engine program and budget cuts to make that possible in 1998 with AMR/Baystar Ambulance .

OUCH !!

"OUCH"??
Who's hurt? The stretcher looks empty to me and there aren't any wrecked vehicles even visible in the photo.

Where's Roy and Johnny ?

HA ! I noticed that one of the sirens on this page is a classic B&M Super Cheif that was common in many So Cal departments in the 50's to the late 70's . The Super Cheif had an unmistakably unique sound that no one in emergency services in that area ever forgot and it was also used in many t.v shows . If you saw Emergency or Adam-12 in it's earlier days , some of the ambulances featured this siren .

However , I am looking for one to put on a Cadillac type ambulance that I would like to restore for our local junior college's EMT program and cruise around in to show off when the program is shut down for the summer !

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that copcar started unbolting this with his Swiss Army knife 30 seconds after taking the picture?

CA Department of Forestry.

Technically their official name these days is the CA Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
