I always thought that this was a place to look at the photos and make comments like" nice car" or "my dad had a car like that " I didin't realize we would be getting sooo much information that really doesn't matter to folks...this is an ambulance from 1974 for cryin' out loud!!!

Well if you were to read what I wrote about the KKK Federal Lighting Spefications, you can search the internet and look it up for yourself. I will admit that I was wrong in saying that all ambulances are mandated, it only applies to ambulances that are purchased with federal funds, but almost every city that runs an ambulance or any private company, has ambulances purchased with federal funds, IE taxes, and grants, so they are mandated federally in the US and must follow the specifications or they can be red-lined. A lot of states also require that the KKK specification be the lighting requirement in their states, that way everyone is on one page and ALL ambulance makers know what the KKK specifications are.

I would like to hear your knowledge of these federal lighting regulations for ambulances. I have seen as many differnt kind of lighting combinations on ambulances as I have on any other emergency vehicle.

I think he was more running about how a lot of states copy each other, Ill may have copied TX and made somethings mandatory on their vehicles. One things is for sure all Ambulances and fire trucks are MANDATED, federally, by the lighting they can have on their emergency vehicles, as some people have stated, they can get purple and pink and use them as lights, no they can not. Ambulances are mandated by KKK Regulations (no not the Klan), and Fire Vehicles are mandated by NFPA Regulations.

This could be from the Commisner Blair era he kind of tossed traditon to the side with the Blakc over red and green and red lights and tried to reorganize all the stations by number etc...

I have seen federal grants for patrol cars that will specify that the car has to be a ford or a chevy. I also know of a department that recently got a federal grant to buy lightbars and the grant said that they had to buy LED bars.

Do you think that everything that is mandatory in Texas is mandatory in Illinois? As was said in an earlier comment, it is proabably orange and white rather that the tradional CFD red and black because it was purchased with federal funds. Federal grants for vehicles often specify certain equipment or markings that must be on the vehicle.

You might be right about that. I was told the story once on why the break from tradition. But I can't remember if it was due to Federal mandate, a shortage of units with quick purchases of whatever was available or simply that CFD decided to use higher visibility. i.e. I am typing to hear myself type.

Of course! This Chicago ambulance had an orange stripe because orange stripes were mandatory in Texas, and because all of the medics were vets and poor people. Makes perfect sense to me.

Sorry. a long time ago, orange stripes used to be mandatory in Texas

OK.. time for worthless history of CFD ambulances It was white and omaha orange because it was paid for with federal funds. That ambulance was part of the "model cities" program. It was a program to get vets and "under privileged" jobs and get them off the street. So make them paramedics..
