I'm no expert here on FD trucks, wait, yes I am. I'd say engine 505 helps extinguish fires in some manner.

I would imagine you'd have to ask FDNY what 505 is for. Assuming you don't mean the American flag, the other object hanging off the ceiling is an exhaust tube. It gets hooked to the exhaust of the fire engine so that when they start it inside the building, it doesn't fill the bay with diesel fumes.

first: wat is the function of engine 505?, nd second: wat is the thing hanging from the ceiling in the middle of the picture?

    Fire Patrol 2

Here is the website for the union local. They are a seprate fire salvage company paid for and run by the fire insurance underwriters of New york. They are the last ones in any US city.

    Fire Patrol 2

In the old days, they were a mobile patrol force that watched for fires and then their main job was protecting property as opposed to life. They were mostly funded by insurance companies. They also overhauled the fire scene, salvaging what they could.

I want to say that they are basically the same today but in this world of instant communication, why do they need "spotter" patrol? And this truck is definitely an FDNY rig, as opposed to the old "private fire patrol" wagons. Maybe it's just tradition and these guys remain mobile as opposed to couped up in a station.
