The older ones 2000-2003, that are dept had were plagued with transmission problems. Thats the only notorious problem I have ever heard of with them overall.
Most American cops don't like them because of their smaller size when compared to the Crown Victoria or Caprice.

The words: "to protect and to serve" are missing.

They were added shortly after this photo was taken. This Plymouth was not quite finished when it was displayed at the Ripon Show in 2005.

The vehicle shop number is placed on the wrong side of the trunk door. But I like the car anyway.

The antenna in the middle of the square is I think for CB, as well as the one that is fender mounted on the right rear. CHP K-9 units are the only CHP units that CBs and the added antennas. Look at regualr CHP units and you will notice they lack hald of the antennas. Commerical units also have the CBs. Glass mount is the scanners, they have one in the console and one in the trunk, yes they have a full console mounted on the shelf in the trunk.

And yes the operate on a Low Band. 39.xxx to 42.xxx state wide. Since they operate on such a low band they have addinitonal radios in the trunk and console that act for patches to other departments and CLEMARS (CA Law Enforcement Mutual Aid Radio System) So no matter what department you work for in CA you can talk to a different department.

This is an amazing pic of an amazing car. Cool rims, cool light bar, cool paint, (surely) amazing engine... (not to mention the various extra gismos inside)
Ya'll have my word: I'll never D.A.R.E.

In my department we constantly recover lojack vehicles both moving and abandoned stationary. The GPS (Onstar, etc...) is a pretty good system but like everyting it has it's problems. It has a delay when the GPS company relays the message to the 911 desk who then relays the message to the police dispatcher, who then relays the message to you. By that time the car can be anywhere and the process starts all over again. I've also come across the problem of cars being stored in a container or warehouse and the GPS drops the signal. By the way my lojack only uses the 4 roof antennas, the other antennas on the CHP car must be for radios.

I don't believe they have the back doors painted black anymore, but besides that, they have the same scheme (although their newer cars have LED lightbars on them).

Guest William wrote: Thursday, April 12, 2007 - 16:46

Some one mentioned they had a newer design, true? Always thought this was still used to this day.

well hate to break off the parade but the lo jack system is proven to be useless most large metro cities use the new and advanced g.p.s system to track units and also civilian vehicles..the reason stronger signal on the g.p.s. and the low jack uses a very low signal so low you have to be real near to the beacon to detect it...its located on the vhf low band..notice the long coil on the bottom of the whip(antenna)also i dont see any trunking antennas in this unit..so they must communicte with the low band as well

The Chevy Impala is nothing but the bean counter's way of saving money. A lot of departments (mine included) tried them & dumped them. No room, no speed & mechanically junk. GM should be ashamed to call this a police package.
