I drove a van almost like this and I thought it was a peice of junk.

Guest William wrote: Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 13:02

This a lovely restored car. Is it private or owned by the agency still?

Guest William wrote: Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 13:01

And yet they still insist on walking right up next to the car when the window is down.

The 1976 B-body Dodge was called "Coronet" and had two large round headlights. In 1977, the name changed to Monaco and it got a minor facelift which included the 4 smaller rectangular headlamps. The Monaco remained unchanged for its last year run in 1978.

I realized that my comment earlier this evening had an error - I identified this car as a 1986 Dodge - in reality, it is (I think) the 1976 model. And of course, the preceding years, the CHP used the larger 1975 and 1974 Dodge patrol cars. John Yeaw, Badge #7815 (CHP, Ret.)

John,
This Monaco is a 1977 model and originally was a CHP car. I am the owner and restorer. Thanks for your kind words.

Looks like the 1986 CHP Dodge. A great car, fun to drive and smaller (thus faster) than the preceding years' 1984 and 1985 Dodge. Without the roof lights, you got about 11 MPH more on the top end, so the "slick top" was preferred. After dark, if you hang your hat on the shotgun you could follow a speeder and (in silhouette) it would look like you had someone sitting right next to you when the speeder looked in his rearview mirror. Once you put the old style "bus driver" hat on to write the pinch, he could be seen craning his neck to see who else you had in the patrol car! I once crashed one of these (with less than 2,000 miles on it) into a steel guardrail during a pursuit in excess of 100 MPH - we lost the right front fender, the hood and the right front tire was flat, but the engine was still running so I chased the bad guy up and down city streets with three good tires in the middle of the night (in Hollywood) until we finally got him. The Sergeant was not too thrilled but we were! My partner thought he was going to die when we (I was driving) hit the guard rail, but I always said, "If you aren't bending any metal, you aren't doing your job!" We had some good times working the graveyard shift in LA for almost seven years, 1971 to 1978.... what a great car, and a superb restoration job. John Yeaw, Badge #7815 (CHP, Ret.)

Wow! The 1970 Mercury Monterey! The 2nd car I drove as a young CHP officer (after the lightning fast 1969 Dodge). This was a big, heavy and roomy car; you would think it would lack speed, but it was veeery fast. At high speeds it would sort of settle down on the springs and hug the road. No power steering though, so it took a lot of strength to manuever at low speeds (I bet few of today's female officers could parallel park one). Lots of room in the back seat for the hapless arrestee(s) - often more than one at a time. The record was seven (7) arrestees going to jail at one time - they were on the floor in the back, sitting on each other's laps and one in front between my partner and I! Thanks for the memories of this CHP work horse; I'm glad at least one has survived. John Yeaw, Badge #7815 (CHP, Ret.)

Most police departments in the CA do not have the Chevy Impalas except this police department and a handful police departments.

Does anyone know which car maker produces this truck? In other words, does anyone know the name of the trruck?

Similar to those used at Jack Nicklaus' annual Muirfield Village golf tournaments at Dublin, Ohio, these carts a bit more powerful than their
riding lawn-mowers from the "Lawn Enforcement" division...
