Is this the last time the CPD bought marked Fords until that 78 LTDII?
*********************
As far as I know, yes. The next Fords were in 1978 and they were Ford Fairmonts along with the LTDIIs.

That's Capt. Jack Sheahy, my first watch commander. A hell of a great guy. his brother Ed was the deputy chief of area #2 at the time.

That is a Chicago PD traffic car with a Mars bar and roof mounted rear facing red lights. The PO with the white hat on is the CPD traffic division officer investigating the crash

Rode one of these brand new in the summer of 1990 as a PPO. Took two tours of loop traffic because of it. Had free run of lakefront from Grant Park to Lincoln Park and all they wanted was some parking tix.

Guest tim szarzynski wrote: Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 1:26

This was a foot chase gone bad. The officer ran out of the car and forgot to put it in park.

Guest tim szarzynski wrote: Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 1:25

These were useless! They were loaded with diamond plate and were so heavy the suspension could not handle the weight. Like me if you were over 6 feet tall you couldn't sit in the passenger seat.
************************
Oh come on, Tim. These were sort of fun. I was assigned to this one for about a year. We installed a stereo in it. You never had to worry about falling asleep on midnights driving one because they rattled so loudly. The rear cargo doors wouldn't open so we never used the compartment in the back. Then we had a goof kick out the plexiglas partition and we couldn't use the compartment in the front either for a while.
How about hauling DOAs? We carried them in the Astrovan a few times too.

Just another one of the more interesting vehicles we've had through the years...

are you selling?
+++++++++++++++++
This timeless beauty is also for sale. At 91000, she has a few more miles than all the others in our inventory and because of that, we're looking to let her go at the amazingly low price of $675. This one is the last of her breed. 350 cubes and plenty of ponies bridled up under the hood looking to gallop you away to wherever life beckons.

I wonder if you can see the Board of Trade building at all from that spot nowadays.

sorry, not asking if anything is for sale, just want to know what that big thing in the background is that says "exhibit cruiser"?
+++++++++++++++++++++++
The Exhibit Cruiser was a large trailer pulled by a semi. It was used from the 1960s until the early 80s. The trailer part was like a mobile classroom with displays, crime prevention tips, interesting artifacts, etc. It would go to civic events, festivals and other large-scale activities and would be used for fostering good public relations between the police and the citizenry. The department stopped using it around the time I started in 1986. I remember it parked at HQ when I was hired. It was moved to our vehicle facility about 10 years ago and has now become a storage bin for car parts.

I have a picture of the Exhibit Cruiser in 1975 when it was still painted in the old blue CPD scheme

Why did the chicago police stop using Chrysler corp police cars after 1978?
****************************
Because they could not supply cars at the lowest bid.

I miss seeing these 3 whellers on the streets
************************

Well I don't miss driving them. They are death traps and they ran like crap. The new 4 wheel APVs are 100% safer and more reliable and Cushman-style carts are great for use in bad weather.

By any chance was that last 90' Caprice a Station Wagon? About 2 years ago I visited my uncle who lives next door to a Chicago PD Canine unit, and he had an 87-90 Caprice Wagon parked in front of his house. I noted it as unusual, but I figured that the wagons where not as abused as most patrol vehicles, and therefore simply lasted longer.
***************
As far as I'm aware, all the Chevy wagons were replaced with Chevy Astro or GMC Safari mini vans. The last square-body Caprice was an admin car, #8235 that was marked but had no lightbar.
